(Source) - For the first time since breaking football, the media, and the internet, Richard Sherman addressed the reaction to his postgame interview, and his critics' use of the word "thug."
" The only reason it bothers me is because it seems like it's the accepted way of calling somebody the N-word nowadays. Because they know. There was a hockey game where they didn't even play hockey, they just threw the puck aside and started fighting. I saw that, and said, 'Oh man, I'm the thug? What's going on here?
"I know some 'thugs,' and they know I'm the furthest thing from a thug. I've fought that my whole life, just coming from where I'm coming from. Just because you hear Compton, you hear Watts, you hear cities like that, you just think 'thug, he's a gangster, he's this, that, and the other,' and then you hear Stanford, and they're like, 'oh man, that doesn't even make sense, that's an oxymoron.'
"You fight it for so long, and to have it come back up and people start to use it again, it's frustrating."
Now I realize I already said that I like Richard Sherman, and I stand by that, but with that said he's just trying to make himself the victim here. And his attempt to justify hockey players as thugs because they fight on the ice is so half-assed is makes me sick. Dude, the sport embraces fighting and the refs allow it to happen. In no way, shape or form is abiding by the normal rules of hockey a thuggish act. It's a different sport and a different culture altogether, simple as that. Maybe to the unknowing spectator, such as yourself, it seems out of line, but that's only because you're not familiar with it.
Listen Dick, what you don't seem to understand is that analysts aren't calling you a "thug" because you're black, or because you're from Compton. They are calling you that because you screamed a classless, inarticulate statement about an opponent into the face of a frightened looking white female reporter. Personally, I half blame Erin Andrews for the outrage. New footage came out today from Fox Deportes that shows her watching Sherman screaming the same exact things into the face of a Latino journalist literally seconds before she interviewed him and then even shows him giving her a giant fucking hug before the interview that has now become internet sensation. But no. Tightass, unprofessional Erin looked like she was terrified that the big, black football player was about to rape her ragged in the middle of the stadium.

Now I'm not saying that there aren't racists out there that said some horrible things to/about Sherman because I'm absolutely certain that there are. But suggesting that people are getting away with being blatantly racist by using a substitute for the N-word is absolutely ridiculous. You got caught up in the moment, Dick, and that's perfectly ok. But don't try to point the finger back at white America by calling all of us bigots because you couldn't control yourself in a post-game interview. So not cool bro, so not cool.
PS - I hate Erin Andrews. Yeah sure she's still very hot (for almost 40, she's insanely hot), but at the same time she's creeping up on 40 which is too old to be a sex symbol unless you're Kate Beckinsale. And believe me Erin, you're not Kate Beckinsale. At this point you're basically just a middle aged sorority chick/jersey chaser who runs around with her younger, more virile counterparts to stay in the spotlight and it's getting a little depressing to watch. And before you say this is sexist, I'm not saying she needs to get out of the limelight because she's an older woman and they don't belong in sports or anything like that. I'm saying she needs to get out of it because she has zero actual sports knowledge and is only there because she happens to be hot. Jackie McMullen, for example, knows a shitload about basketball and can argue it until the cows come home, and that is why her career has lasted this long and will continue on further. If you can discuss/write about sports informatively then by all means you deserve to work in sports, but Andrews' looks will run out sooner or later and once they're gone, what's left? Air, and nothing else. So a word of advice: maybe get out of the way and let one of the hundreds of new, younger, hotter chicks get a shot. I want some fresh blood.
Here's a prime example of our girl's sports knowledge.
Pretty bold prediction there Erin, let's see how it played out...
Almost had it.
